Cerebrolysin: Peptide Mixture Research Guide (2026)

Last updated

Introduction (research-only scope)

Cerebrolysin is not a single peptide but a mixture of low-molecular-weight peptides and free amino acids produced from porcine brain tissue. That distinction changes everything about how it can be documented, verified and studied, and it is where this guide starts.

Research use only. The material described here is a laboratory reagent for in-vitro research by qualified professionals. It is not a medicine, supplement, cosmetic ingredient or veterinary product, is not for human or animal use, and nothing on this page is medical advice or a claim of effect in any person.

What is Cerebrolysin?

Cerebrolysin (CAS 12656-61-0) consists of fragments below roughly 10 kDa. Because it is a mixture rather than a defined molecule, there is no single expected mass to confirm by mass spectrometry and no single purity figure that means what it means for a synthetic peptide; batch documentation for mixtures describes composition and process control instead. Peptra Labs supplies it as a research reagent, 60 mg per vial.

How the reported mechanism works

Proposed neurotrophic action

The manufacturer’s rationale is that the peptide fraction mimics the action of endogenous neurotrophic factors. Because the material is a mixture, attributing an observed effect to a specific component is difficult by construction, which is a genuine limitation for mechanistic work.

Why it is used in some countries

It is licensed and widely used in acute stroke and cognitive indications in Russia, Eastern Europe, China and several post-Soviet countries, a pattern that reflects regional regulatory history as much as evidence.

What the published evidence covers

Here the record is unusually clear, and it is not flattering. The 2023 Cochrane review of Cerebrolysin in acute ischaemic stroke, covering seven randomised trials and 1,773 participants, concluded that moderate-certainty evidence indicates it probably has no beneficial effect on all-cause death, probably no beneficial effect on the total number of people with serious adverse events, and that there is a potential increase in non-fatal serious adverse events. A 2025 systematic review in Alzheimer’s and Dementia covers the vascular cognitive impairment literature more broadly. Anyone citing Cerebrolysin positively should read those reviews first.

How to verify a Cerebrolysin research peptide is real and pure

Two tests answer two different questions: mass spectrometry confirms identity (expected molecular mass under 10 kDa; a peptide mixture rather than a single defined mass), HPLC quantifies purity. Our specification is at least 98%. Check the batch number printed on your vial against the lab reports archive: where a batch has been tested, its report is published there and links to the testing laboratory’s own verification page. If your batch is not listed yet, ask us for its documentation before use; a “typical” certificate is not evidence for a specific vial. See how to read a certificate of analysis.

Storage and reconstitution

Store the lyophilised material sealed, dry and protected from light at 2 to 8 °C for routine laboratory use, colder for long-term archiving. After reconstitution with bacteriostatic water, keep refrigerated and use within the window your protocol defines; repeated freeze-thaw cycles degrade peptides. General handling for all our reagents is in the peptide storage protocol.

Regulatory status

Cerebrolysin is a licensed medicine in a number of countries, mainly in Eastern Europe and Asia, and is not authorised in the United States; we make no statement about any specific European country, which can be checked in the national register. The research material supplied here is not that medicinal product. It is not named on the WADA Prohibited List. Research-grade material supplied here is not a medicine and is for in-vitro laboratory use only. The wider framework, including anti-doping status, is described in the peptide risk profile.
