Why research peptides are supplied freeze-dried, and what that means for handling.
The process
Material is frozen and water is removed under vacuum by sublimation, leaving a dry cake or powder with very low residual moisture.
Why it is used
Removing water slows the hydrolytic and oxidative processes that degrade peptides in solution, which makes dry material more robust during transport and storage.
Appearance
A white to off-white cake or powder is typical. Appearance alone is not an indicator of purity or identity.
After reconstitution
Once dissolved, the stability advantages of the dry state no longer apply, and the solution should be handled and stored per the institution’s validated procedure.
